材料学院《材料工程名师讲座》:Carbon Nanotubes and Coatings – from Generation to Application

Abstract:

The presentation contains three topics:

    1. nano-/ microlayers

    2. nanostructures

    3. nanoparticles 

These topics have mainly to do with laser applications.

In the first topic multi-nanolayers are presented which are used for X-ray and EUV mirrors as well as reactive multi-nanolayers for soldering. Also the generation of DLC (diamond like carbon) (t-aC) layers with extreme low friction coefficient for automotive applications as well as aerospace industry will be presented. 

In the second topic it will be presented how thin carbon layers can be structured for an additional reduction of the friction coefficient in the case of using lubricant. The second application of carbon nanostructures is the digital storage of information like books or pictures. 

The third topic focusses on possible applications of carbon nanotubes for DEA (dielectric elastomer actors) and for energy storage like batteries as well as for solar absorption.


Biography:

In January 1997, Eckhard Beyer assumed the position of Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS in Dresden, which engages in application-oriented research and development in the area of laser and surface technology. 

Furthermore, E. Beyer was appointed to the position of full Professor for Laser and Surface Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Technische Universitaet Dresden in 1997. E. Beyer initiated the foundation of a new Institute of Manufacturing Technology in 2003, integrated his professorship and has been acting as the Director of this institute since that time. 

E. Beyer graduated from the Technische Universitaet Darmstadt with a diploma in physics and received a Ph.D. in physical engineering.
